The grass grid, also known as a lawn grid, grass mat, or lawn protection mat, is a continuous, open-grid structure made of high-strength, high-toughness plastic (usually HDPE or PP). It's designed to address the conflict between greenery and load-bearing properties, transforming green spaces into practical, load-bearing spaces.

Structure and Materials

Four advantages of enhanced grass grid

  • 1. High-strength, compressive-resistant, thick walls, with anti-compression supports, and long-lasting aging resistance.
  • 2. Flat-end design ensures uniform load distribution.
  • 3. 505mm x 500mm length and width facilitate installation.
  • 4. Strong and precise buckles provide a secure, secure fit and prevent sagging.

Detailed Display Of The 5cm Reinforced Grass Grid
  • 1. Appearance: Typically modular panels with numerous holes or grids that snap together like puzzle pieces to form a continuous mesh structure.
  • 2. Material:
    • HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene): The most common choice, offering excellent compression resistance, weather resistance (UV resistance, high and low temperature resistance), and environmental friendliness (recyclability).
    • PP (Polypropylene): Another commonly used plastic with similar properties to HDPE.
  • 3. Color: Primarily green, designed to blend in with natural lawns and create a harmonious aesthetic. Other colors, such as black and gray, are also available.
  • 4. Design Features:
    • Honeycomb structure: Mimicking the mechanical principles of a honeycomb, it evenly distributes pressure from above to the base layer, preventing ground collapse.
    • High Hollowness: The holes or spaces within the grid are filled with soil and planted with turf, ensuring space for grass growth and water permeability.

Main Advantages

  • 1. Perfect Combination of Greening and Load-Bearing Capacity: Its core value lies in providing 100% green space while also withstanding the loads of vehicles and pedestrians, solving the problem of pure lawns being easily damaged.
  • 2. Excellent Drainage: The open grid structure allows rainwater to quickly seep into the ground, effectively reducing surface water accumulation and replenishing groundwater, in line with the sponge city concept.
  • 3. Grass Root Protection: The sidewalls of the grid protect grass roots from damage caused by wheel crushing and rotation, ensuring healthier and longer-lasting turf growth.
  • 4. Environmental Protection and Energy Saving: Compared to fully hardened pavement (such as cement and asphalt), it reduces the heat island effect, reduces ground heat reflection, and regulates ambient temperature and humidity.
  • 5. Convenient and Cost-Effective Construction: The modular design allows for quick and easy assembly and installation. Compared to traditional stone or concrete pavement, the overall cost is generally lower.
  • 6. Environmental Beautification: Providing a large expanse of greenery, it offers a softer, more natural feel than hard paving, enhancing the overall quality of the environment.

Applications of Grass Grids

Grass grid have a wide range of applications, suitable for nearly any scenario requiring a balance between ground load-bearing capacity and ecological sustainability.

1. Parking Lots (The Most Classic Application)

  • Eco-Parking Lots/Green Parking Lots: Replacing traditional concrete paving with lush, grassy parking spaces not only meets parking requirements but also meets greening requirements, creating an aesthetically pleasing and environmentally friendly experience.
  • Fire Egress: In high-standard residential communities and industrial parks, fire escapes must remain accessible and able to withstand the weight of fire trucks. Grass grids meet these load-bearing requirements while maintaining a green appearance, eliminating the need for cold, concrete pathways.
  • Temporary Event Venues: During holidays or large-scale events, lawn plazas can be used as temporary parking spaces, quickly returning to green space after the event.

2. Pedestrian and Recreation Areas

  • Park Trails/Promenades: Paved paths in parks and gardens offer comfortable walking and blend seamlessly with the natural environment.
  • Plazas and Terraces: Used in villa gardens, resorts, and outdoor terraces and plazas at restaurants, providing a stable load-bearing surface while maintaining lush greenery.
  • Pitch Surroundings: Pathways and areas around sports facilities such as golf courses and soccer fields.

3. Special Projects and Municipal Projects

  • Slope Protection and Soil and Water Conservation: Used on slopes or riverbanks, the plant roots within the grid work together with the grid structure to effectively reinforce the soil and prevent soil erosion.
  • Roof Gardens: Its lightweight design is ideal for green roof walkways and activity areas, reducing roof loads.
  • Tree Pond Covers: Covering the soil around tree roots allows moisture and air to enter while providing pedestrian access and protecting the roots.

4. Other Applications

  • Camping Areas, RV Parking Areas
  • Private Driveways
  • Temporary Venues, Exhibitions, Markets, and Other Venues

Construction Steps

  • 1. Foundation Preparation: Excavate the base layer and compact and level it. Lay a graded crushed stone layer according to load-bearing requirements and compact it to create a stable foundation.
  • 2. Laying the Leveling Layer: Apply a thin layer of sand over the gravel layer to level the surface and facilitate installation of the grass grids.
  • 3. Laying the Grass Grids: Tightly join the grass grid modules and lay them on the leveling layer.
  • 4. Filling with Soil: Fill the grids with soil suitable for grass growth, filling the grids to a level slightly below the top of the grids.
  • 5. Planting the Turf: You can either sow grass seeds directly or lay pre-seeded turf. The latter method establishes quickly and produces immediate results.
  • 6. Watering and Maintenance: After completion, water the grids thoroughly and perform initial maintenance until the turf is fully established.

Summary

Grass grids are an innovative, practical, and environmentally friendly material that cleverly addresses the conflict between urban hardening and ecological greening. By planting grass in a solid plastic grid, it creates a breathable, permeable, and vibrant active floor, which is widely used in many areas such as parking lots, fire lanes, park trails, etc. It is one of the important tools for realizing the concepts of "green infrastructure" and "sponge city".
